European monies administrated by the RDC have been used to install a new path directly opposite the Tully Mill Complex entrance to link into Florencecourt Forest Park, and to develop the Mill Pond for Field Study. Forest path into Florencecourt Estate:The main forest was planted after the Second World War and conceals a maze of trails, ruins and rivers. It is bordered by a large coniferous forest and natural woodland, all accessible to the public, and offers three forest trails, waymarked to guide walkers through some of its most beautiful parts. Of special interest are mature Oak trees, planted some 200 years ago, and the original Irish Yew tree, discovered here in 1760. Running alongside the new path is the Mill Race, which feeds the on-site Mill Pond. Both are man-made features, originally created to supply a head of water for the water wheel, which was used to grind corn into flour in the Mill. Pond Dipping Platform:The rich oxygenated waters now provide a valuable habitat for wildlife. Planted with native species, the waters typically contain a variety of micro-organisms, crustaceans, molluscs and insects, which can be investigated using the new Pond Dipping Platform, situated beside the Mill Restaurant.
